Dear WWPR Supporter,
Thanks to the dedication and support of WWPR sponsors
and volunteers, the 17th annual Washington PR Woman of the Year
awards ceremony was a great success with more than 200 people in
attendance.
Carolyn Tieger, Partner and Director of the Public
Affairs Division, Porter Novelli, was named “Washington PR
Woman of the Year” at this year’s annual awards ceremony
held Wednesday, November 16. The annual event honored three of the
area’s most outstanding public relations executives. The award
is presented to a public relations practitioner working in the Washington
metropolitan area who has demonstrated outstanding
leadership, integrity and community involvement.
The
two other honorees were Vivian Kelly, President
and Founder, Interprose Public Relations, Inc. and Maria Yannopolous,
Adjunct Faculty, American University and President, MEY Communications,
Inc.
The event also featured Eleanor Clift, ground
breaking Washington correspondent, author, and political pundit
as Keynote Speaker and a raffle to benefit WWPR’s pro bono
client Safe Shores, the D.C. Children’s Advocacy Center. Thanks
to the generosity of those who attended the event and purchased
raffle tickets $500.00 will be donated to Safe Shores in WWPR and
Eleanor Clift’s name.

Doorways Surpasses
Their Goals!
A special thank you goes to Chris Gallagher at
Ambertone Printing in Springfield, VA who printed promotional materials
for the new pro-bono client, Doorways for Women & Families.
The WWPR team Women Who Walk the Talk raised $500
for The Help the Homeless Walkathon held Sunday, November 19. Doorways
reached their goal of raising a total of $125,000 at this event.
In addition, Doorways was listed in the 2005 edition
of Catalogue of Philanthropy, released in November, as a charity
in which people should donate. Doorways was also selected as one
of the final 75 candidates out of 250 applicants, in the category
of non-profits that make a DIFFERENCE working off a budget of $2
million or less. Congratuations Doorways on your mentions and accomplishments!
WWPR's 2003-2005 Pro Bono client Safe Shores -
The DC Children's Advocacy Center - is wrapping up their annual
holiday assistance drive to grant the holiday wishes of children
in need. They are still in need of specific items for teenagers
(boys and girls), which will be wrapped and given as holidays gifts.
Also, they would appreciate donations in the form of wrapping paper,
clothing boxes, sticker tags and any other wrapping supplies. Help
Safe Shores wrap the donated presents at a Wrapping Party on Wednesday,
December 14 from 5:30-7:00 p.m.

2006 Annual Meeting and Professional Development Luncheon
WHO: Dr. Larissa and James Grunig,
Professor and Professor Emeritus, University of Maryland
WHAT: “Oh, the Places We’ve
Gone and the Things (in Public Relations) We’ve Seen”
Jim and Laurissa Grunig taught for 36 years and
27 years, respectively, at the University of Maryland. They will
share their experiences as international lecturers, having addressed
professional and scholarly audiences in some 40 countries. Recently
retired, they reflect on what their research and travels have revealed
about such critical concepts as strategic management, research for
public relations, ethics, and diversity in the field. They will
conclude their remarks with speculation about the future of public
relations and of the people who work in this boundary-spanning function.

OVARIAN CANCER NATIONAL ALLIANCE
Position Announcement
November 2005
DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS
The director will be responsible for leading
organizational efforts in a range of project areas. She/He works
with the executive director, the deputy director, board members,
and an array of designated spokespeople to ensure that the organization’s
message conveyed accurately and effectively to a wide audience,
through a variety of media including print, broadcast, Internet,
mail, and events.
The successful candidate will have a Bachelor’s
degree (a Masters degree in journalism or a related area a plus),
excellent writing and editing skills, public relations instincts,
proven ability to build and execute successful proactive communications
campaigns, and five + years of relevant experience in non-profit
communications leadership. Experience in health or a related field
required; experience in, or understanding of cancer and/or women’s
health issues a plus.
Responsibilities:
- Providing expert advice on message development
and public relations strategy
- Cultivating and maintaining productive relationships
with both health and news reporters
- Developing and disseminating press releases
- Developing and pitching stories
- Placing letters-to-the-editor and Op-Eds
- Responding to press inquiries and providing
appropriate follow-up
- Promoting public education initiatives and
organizational special events
- Cultivating and promoting celebrity spokespersons,
artists, and other high-profile individuals
- Negotiating media and business partnerships
to maximize our message exposure
- Managing public service announcement projects
- Providing technical media relations assistance
to partner member activists
- Managing all aspects of production of the
Alliance’s quarterly newsletter
- Maintaining website and ensuring that content
is accurate, updated, and optimally presented
- Working with consultant public relations firms,
website developers, or other outside vendors
- Arranging or providing photos for major organizational
events
- Monitoring health news, and maintaining clipping
file
- Staffing communications committee of the board
of directors
Salary commensurate with experience; excellent

Alliance is a Washington-based, survivor led, national umbrella
organization that brings together ovarian cancer activists, women’s
health advocates, health care providers and researchers across the
country to increase public and professional understanding of ovarian
cancer and advocate for more effective research, diagnostics and
treatment. Our mission is to conquer ovarian cancer by uniting individuals
and organizations in a national movement.
