OCTOBER IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH
WWPR Hosts
Gift Card Drive Honoring Pro-Bono
Client and the
Women and Families They Empower
Did you know?
- One in
four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime.
- A
child’s exposure to domestic violence is the strongest risk factor in
continuing violent behavior from one generation to the next.
- Direct
domestic violence medical and mental health care costs amount to
nearly $1.4 billion annually.
- Each
year, domestic violence costs employers $728 million due to lost
productivity, including 7.9 million work days.
In
honor of the thousands of courageous women who are survivors of domestic
violence every year and those hard-working individuals who advocate on
their behalf, we invite you to bring a gift card for $15 or more to our
October professional development luncheon. (See details BELOW about the NPR
tour).
One
hundred percent of the proceeds will be donated to WWPR’s pro-bono client,
Doorways for Women and Families (formerly The Arlington Community Temporary
Shelter). Please donate in the form of gift cards for Safeway, Giant,
Target or the Ballston Commons Mall. Non-members
may replace their regular professional development fee with a $15 gift
card.
Doorways empowers women and families
who are abused, homeless or at-risk to live safe, secure and
self-sufficient lives. They provide self-sufficiency and prevention
services, and educate the larger community about domestic violence and
homelessness. For more information about their work, how to volunteer, or
how to donate, please go to www.doorwaysVA.org,
or contact the Pro-Bono Co-Chairs Lauren Lawson and Sarah Wayne at info@wwpr.org or at

NPR TALK AND TOUR:
OCTOBER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT BROWN BAG LUNCH
Join us for an enlightening brown bag lunch “Talk and Tour” of this
internationally acclaimed provider of news, information and entertainment
programming whose mission is “to work in partnership with member stations
to create a more informed public — one challenged and invigorated by a
deeper understanding and appreciation of events, ideas and cultures.”
It
might not be surprising that NPR, incorporated in 1970, is the world's
first noncommercial, satellite-delivered radio network --and is the media
industry leader in sound gathering and production. But did you know that
NPR is an independent, private, nonprofit membership organization, that it
is not a radio station itself and does not own any radio stations and yet
serves a growing audience of 26 million Americans each week in partnership
with more than 800 independently operated, noncommercial public radio
stations?
Learn just how they do it --and tour their state of the art facilities,
then meet with NPR’s VP, Communications, Andi Sporkin, as she outlines the
NPR Communications division. She will explain how they reach the public and
other stakeholders through the press, how they determine what to promote
(where, when and why) and the impact of 24/7 online news services, bloggers
and other new media on established Communications activities.
Please arrive early for security check-in and to ensure inclusion on the
tour. Be sure to bring your picture ID (and lunch). We will begin with the
tour and follow with our talk.

PERSUASIVE PRESENTATIONS-TECHNIQUES AND TRUTHS FOR
SUCCESS: SEPTEMBER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT RECAP
Our speaker, Susan
Tomai of Oratorio began her Persuasive
Presentation with a story of having whooping cough while on
vacation with her family. She used her story to persuade the audience to
get a booster shot against whopping cough. This example proved to be a good
illustration of a persuasive presentation.
The
working seminar began with Tomai asking all participants to think about a
presentation they have coming-up and write down key points. Then, she
recommended picking out three key points and using anecdotes and quotes to
support the main points.
Next, Tomai
recommended planning the opening. Good ideas for an opening include:
telling a story, using a prop, reviewing a news story or telling a joke (if
appropriate). Other Tomai recommendations for a persuasive presentation
are:
·
Put a face to your
facts and tell a story. - Have good visuals. - Use your body to emphasize
points and use your fingers as visual gestures.
·
Use persuasive
words in your presentation. The 12 most persuasive words are: discovery,
easy, guarantee, health, love, money, new, promise, results, safety, save
and you.
The conclusion of
your presentation should:
- Be
delivered with a PUNCH.
- Provide
closure
- Resonate
the main idea
- Give a
final take-away
- Review
and summarize

JOBS
AND OTHER OPPORTUNITIES
NEGOTIATIONPLUS™
FOR WOMEN: The Art of Getting What You Want:
Strategic Research
Institute Presents: NEGOTIATIONPLUS™ FOR WOMEN:
The Art of Getting What You Want -This seminar is designed specifically for
women. It differs from other negotiating training because women negotiate
differently than men and sometimes tend to be less comfortable when
negotiating. Even very successful women who are skilled negotiators often
find it difficult to negotiate for themselves. Moreover, there are
different dynamics when a man negotiates with another man than when a woman
negotiates with a man or a woman negotiates with another woman. Often the
same behavior that is effective for a man is viewed negatively when a woman
engages in it. Women also tend to bring different strengths to the
negotiating table and most negotiating programs do not focus on helping
women maximize those strengths.
Attendees will have the
opportunity to observe, to participate, to ask questions, and to learn from
real life examples. This hands on program, designed to teach women to think
about negotiating differently and to improve their negotiating skills using
the NegotiationPlus™ method, includes exercises and simulations
specifically designed to address situations that you face in your business
and personal lives.
When: October 27, 2006 - Washington, DC - Wyndham Washington, DC
For questions regarding
program content, contact: Bryant Small at
