WHAT: "Where America's Heritage
Begins": The Grand Opening of the National Museum of the American
Indian on the National Mall.
At no time in history have so many Native people
gathered together in Washington, D.C. Opening day on September 21,
2004 alone brought 80,000 people to the National Mall. 25,000 Native
Americans representing more than 500 communities participated in
the Native Nation's Procession and the six-day First American's
Festival attracted an additional 600,000 visitors. By all measures
the Grand Opening of the Smithsonian National Museum of the American
Indian will forever exemplify an exceptional historical milestone
and one of the most uniting and powerful moments of cultural reconciliation
between Native and non-Native peoples. It was also one of the most
globally publicized openings of a cultural institution in recent
years. Come to exchange a dialogue with Maggie Bertin, Thomas Sweeney,
Linda St.Thomas and the Public Affairs staff on the planning and
implementation of a worldwide public relations, marketing, and press
media campaign.
