Message from the President
It is with great pleasure and excitement
that I accept the position of President. I have been a WWPR member
for four years, and have served on the Board of Directors for three.
I look forward to meeting all of WWPR’s members and seeing
you at most if not all of our events.
Since this year is also our organization’s
25th birthday, we have a couple of surprise events in-store for
you!
On the heels of our successful Woman of the Year
event in November, this year’s Woman of the Year will provide
opportunities for our members to be more active on the planning
committee and to volunteer their time for the day of the event.
This is also an exciting year for the Pro Bono
Committee, as we will be selecting a new client for 2006, while
still maintaining our relationship and assistance to Safe Shores.
As for our communication tools, our e-newsletter
will get a new look and a new delivery system. Our website will
have a new 25th Anniversary logo and we’re looking into having
a job opportunities page added to the website.
WWPR’s membership committee will be looking
into marketing opportunities for our organization, and we need your
help to spread the word about WWPR to your fellow PR professionals.
I encourage all of you to become more active in
WWPR; because without our membership’s involvement WWPR can’t
be the organization you want it to be!

WWPR Annual Luncheon Speaker Recap
- How Blogs Are Being Used in Public Relations
Debbie Weil, publisher and consultant and president
of WordBiz.com, demystified the concept of blogs during WWPR’s
annual luncheon, explaining that they are essentially an “e
newsletter that is always on.”
Setting up a blog is fairly simple, and some PR
firms are suggesting that clients publish blogs instead of up e-newsletters.
(Visit www.Typepad.com,
which changes a small fee or www.blogger.com
that is free). Additionally, Weil predicts, blogs will become a
powerful tool for managing crises since a message or response can
go out in a few minutes. Plus, because blogging is a fresh medium,
recent blog entries tend to show up first on Google and other search
engines, which are always scouring the Web for new content; this
puts your message at the top of the list.
The most successful blogs are ones that are authentic,
such as General Motors’ Bob Lutz’s Fast Lane. Blogs
allow executives and other thought leaders to show the world what
they are thinking, and it’s this concept that both constituent
and the media find compelling.
“People think that blogs need to be cool,”
said Weil, “but the most critical thing is that blogs are
authentic and useful.”
Weil suggested that a good way to begin to understand
how to use blogs you’re your organization or client is to
subscribe to a few blogs that interest us. (Visit www.newsgator.com,

Elizabeth Shea leverages nearly 20 years experience
in the technology industry to provide strategic oversight and counsel
to an array of high-growth and mid-market companies, helping them
to build successful communication strategies that enable swift,
results-oriented growth.
From her career beginnings at Apple Computer
through product launch and IPO experiences at several technology
start-ups to working with leading integrators and government resellers,
Shea’s fascination with technology innovation and emerging
technologies has not wavered; neither has her respect for and ability
to create a collaborative work environment where high-performance
teams produce client success.
Her path from employee to employer started with
the founding of her own company, Magellan Marketing (where she doubled
revenues year over year) and led to the co-founding of The Shea
Hedges Group in 1997. She and co-founder Kristi Hedges are recognized
among the top 25 Women Business Owners and Top 25 PR Firms by the
Washington Business Journal and they are most proud of
their ability to create a team-based work environment where clients
“find that a relationship with a public relations firm can
truly be a partnership.”
