Washington Women in Public Relations (WWPR) has elected its new executive board for 2010, its 30th year.

The Board of Directors is a group of up to thirteen WWPR members in good standing who are elected for a term of one year. All Directors serve without compensation and are responsible for the duties of running the organization.

Debbie Friez

Debbie Friez

Debbie Friez is Vice President, Major Accounts for BurrellesLuce, the world’s largest media monitoring company. She handles public relations and manages the relationships with the company's largest accounts. Immediately prior to becoming a Vice President, Friez was an account executive in Washington, DC, and before that held a similar position with the company's Minnesota Clipping Service. Friez is a frequent blogger, speaker and presenter on social media for BurrellesLuce. Previously, Friez was a senior account director for West Glen Communications, a broadcast PR services company. While at West Glen Communications, she was a frequent contributor to the DC Communicator newsletter. She is currently on the advisory board for the Capitol Communicator. Friez is an active member of WWPR, PRSA’s National Capital Chapter, the International Association of Business Communicators, and the Association of Women in Communications. She has served on the WWPR board for the past 3 ½ terms as Vice President and Marketing and Communications Co-Chair.Friez graduated cum laude from the University of North Dakota with a major in Journalism with an emphasis in broadcasting and a major in political science.

Lauren Lawson

laurenLauren Lawson is the Media Relations Manager for Goodwill Industries International and the organization’s spokesperson. Lawson is a communications strategist with more than 10 years of experience in message development, media advocacy, crisis communications, and promotional campaigns.
Before coming to Goodwill, Lawson ran her own consulting firm where she spearheaded the media efforts for Servathon 2007, sponsored by Greater DC Cares and AOL, one of the largest single days of volunteering in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Lawson has also served as the Media Relations Manager for the Children’s Defense Fund and Eagle Publishing. Prior to that, Lawson held positions at the Hachette Book Group (formerly AOL Time Warner Books) and Penguin Putnam. Lawson was recently awarded the Nonprofit Entrepreneurship Award from the Greater Washington Women’s Network. Lawson is a member of several communication professional organizations including the American Marketing Association, the American Society of Association Executives, the Association for Women in Communications, the National Association of Female Executives, and the PRSA’s National Capital Chapter. Lawson also serves on the board of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC/Washington chapter) as the Vice President of Awards. In addition, Lawson chairs the Doorways for Women and Families committee for the Junior League of Washington, overseeing the volunteer needs for the only shelter for women and families in the Arlington, VA area. Lawson has a number of successful broadcast placements to her credit, including CBS Evening News, CNN's American Morning, The Early Show, Fox & Friends, FOX Business, NBC Nightly News, The Rachael Ray Show, and the Today Show. In addition, she has secured feature print stories for clients in AARP, the Associated Press, Newsweek, O, the Oprah Magazine, Parade, People, Reader's Digest, USA Today, and USA WEEKEND.Lawson has served on the board of WWPR for seven terms in various capacities, including Chair of the Pro Bono Committee, Vice President and, most recently, President. She holds a B.A. in English Literature from Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pa., and is a graduate of the Denver Publishing Institute.

Vice President

Erin Wendel

Erin Wendel recently joined the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) as associate director of media relations. She is the first point of contact for the media and regularly positions APTA in national and local media as the primary source of information about physical therapy practice and the profession. Wendel also manages the APTA Media Corps, a select group of APTA members who serve as the primary spokespersons for the association. In 2010, Wendel will work closely with her team to launch the “Move Forward Physical Therapy Brings Motion to Life” branding campaign to consumers through traditional and social media. The new brand aims to expand the physical therapy mindshare from rehabilitation to motion. Previously, Wendel worked as manager of external communications for the American Pharmacists Association (APhA). There, she successfully strategized effective ways to educate consumers about pharmacists’ expanding role on the health care team. She was responsible for creating and managing the association’s relationships with the media and created and distributed external communications related to APhA news and policy. Wendel also managed a variety of APhA’s PR initiatives, including American Pharmacists Month and the SMARxT Disposal program, a partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Wendel also worked as senior public relations specialist for the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA). There she project managed the Association’s “Knock Your Socks Off” and award-wining “Podiatrists Keep America Walking” public education campaigns. She worked on all aspects of the campaigns, including communications strategy, collateral development and measurement. Erin was instrumental in setting up state PR committees for most of APMA’s state associations to assist with the promotion of the campaigns at the local level. She also assisted with the media relations function. Prior to her association PR experience, she worked in the corporate setting. Wendel served as public relations specialist for Long & Foster Real Estate, Inc., where she handled media relations across the company’s seven-state Mid-Atlantic region and Washington, D.C. Before moving to the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area, Wendel worked as public relations coordinator for HealthSouth Corporation, one of the nation's largest providers of outpatient surgery, diagnostic imaging and rehabilitative healthcare services, at their corporate office located in Birmingham, AL. Wendel holds a B.A. in Public Relations from the University of Alabama. She is currently serving her fifth term on WWPR’s Board of Directors. She is also a member of PRSA’s National Capital Chapter.

Treasurer

Sherri Core

sherri coreSherri Core is the founder and president of Core Association Services, Inc., a Fairfax, VA-based association management firm, which specializes in providing services for nonprofit associations. For the past fifteen years, she has served as the chapter manager of PRSA’s National Capital Chapter. With almost 1,400 members, the National Capital Chapter is the largest PRSA chapter in the country. She is also director of administration for the International Association of Business Communicators' (IABC/Washington) chapter. In addition, her firm manages the Potomac Pedalers Touring Club, the largest bicycle club on the east coast, and works with RMK Productions in managing the day-to-day activities of Women in Technology. Prior to forming Core Association Services in 2000, Core co-owned Mayerhofer & Associates, Inc., where she was in charge of the association management division. Before that, she was administrative chief at High Frontier, which is the nation's leading non-government authority on missile defense issues. She has also worked on documentary films, primarily as a script writer, and has participated in other research projects. Either individually or through Core Association Services, Core belongs to several professional associations, including the AMC Institute, ASAE, the National Association of Women’s Business Owners, and[l1] the Fairfax City Chamber of Commerce. She does volunteer work for Arena Stage.
Core graduated with honors from International Business College in Fort Wayne, IN, where she held a B.A. in accounting.

Secretary

Leslie Rutledge

leslieLeslie Rutledge is a Senior Account Manager at MyMediaInfo, the premiere source for media data in North America. She is responsible for new account development, support and management for a client base that includes PR agencies, Fortune 100 companies, solo practitioners, colleges/universities, and nonprofit, and government organizations. She prides herself in finding cost-effective solutions that surpass organizational objectives. Prior to joining MyMediaInfo, Rutledge spent 8 years at Cision US (formerly Bacon's Information, Inc) working her way up the ranks as an Account Manager, Senior Account Manager and Senior Business Development Manager in the company’s media database sales and news clipping teams. While managing sales teams in two office locations, Rutledge established a track record of transforming stagnant opportunities into some of the highest revenue producers in the company’s history. Her work at Cision earned her top sales honors for six consecutive years. Rutledge got her start as a Customer Service Representative in the commercial printing paper industry. Longing for a break from the cold Wisconsin winters, this Milwaukee native relocated to the East Coast in 2001 and now calls Alexandria, VA home. She spends her free time running, volunteering at her church, reading, baking, and keeping up with her two young nieces.

Marketing and Communications Co-Chair

Ashley Settle

Ashley Settle is currently interning with the Edelman D.C. office in its public affairs department. Since beginning at Edelman in August 2009, Settle primarily provides account support to the team by aiding in media outreach efforts and monitoring. A recent graduate, Settle moved to D.C. in June 2009 with a temporary opportunity as the marketing and media program officer for Students Partnership Worldwide, a nonprofit focused on international development and volunteering abroad. At SPW, Settle managed internal communications, social media outreach and media relations. A graduate from the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Settle received a B.A. in Advertising/Public Relations with a minor in English Writing, where she graduated magna cum laude and was named "Student of the Year in Ad/PR." Prior to joining SPW, Settle interned for Orlando-based Curley & Pynn Public Relations, where she developed strategic media outreach plans for numerous clients including the Florida High Tech Cooridor, EA Sports and the Nickelodeon Family Suites. An active member of the Florida Public Relations Association, Settle joined WWPR in June 2009, immediately upon her move to the D.C. area. With roots in traditional media and an insatiable appetite for new media, Settle is active in the blogosphere and Web 2.0 realm.
Settle is also involved with PRSA’s National Capital Chapter, the Association of Women in Communications, UCF Capitol City Alumni Association and the Kappa Alpha Theta D.C. Alumnae Chapter.

Marketing and Communications Co-Chair

Meghan Sager

Meghan Sager is an Online Analyst with New Media Strategies, the industry pioneer and market leader in social media marketing and measurement. Sager joined NMS in August 2009 and, in this position, uses her research, marketing and web knowledge to promote and protect the brands of a diverse roster of clients. Prior to joining NMS, Sager worked for a boutique public relations firm in DC where she was responsible for media outreach, assisting with event media logistics and creating media interview opportunities for military, commercial and nonprofit clients. Sager moved to the D.C. metro area in 2008 and has been a member of WWPR ever since. She is a native of Hampton Road, VA, where she began her a career at an advertising and public relations agency. Her expertise has garnered national media attention for clients in publications including Entrepreneur Magazine, The Washington Post and Men's Fitness Magazine. Sager's efforts has more than doubled the return on investments on numerous campaigns and she has been featured on industry blogs and in PRWeek. In her spare time, she is an active blogger and loves social media. Sager earned her B.A. from James Madison University, majoring in Speech Communications with an emphasis in Public Relations and a minor in Writing and Rhetoric.

Rachel Henderson

Rachel HendersonRachel Henderson is a Senior Account Executive and Media Specialist in the Health Policy Group at Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide. Through her work for non-profit and commercial healthcare clients, Rachel provides expertise in media relations, crisis communications, and issues management. This past year Rachel worked for the Lance Armstrong Foundation to raise the global awareness of cancer. A first-of-its-kind, award-winning program, the LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Campaign convened world leaders, NGOs, and other cancer organizations and advocates to commit to the fight against cancer. Rachel led media relations efforts during the LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Summit in Dublin, Ireland, managing Summit press briefings and interviews for LAF Chairman and Founder Lance Armstrong and President and CEO Doug Ulman. The Summit garnered more than 150 million media impressions in 24 countries and 5 regions around the world including coverage by the BBC, CNN, USA Today, British Medical Journal, Bloomberg, Associated Press, Reuters, and all major Irish publications and broadcast. For the American Peanut Council, Rachel helped to coordinate crisis communications and media relations surrounding one of the nation’s largest-ever food recalls. Rachel monitored real-time media coverage, providing strategic council, and managing media inquiries and interview requests for the Council President including AP, USA Today, CNN.com, Los Angeles Times, Newsday, HealthDay, CBSNews.com, New York Times, UPI and ABC World News Tonight.

Woman of the Year Co-Chair

Emily Deck

EmilyEmily Deck is a Communications Consultant with SiloSmashers, a management consulting firm in Fairfax, VA. In her role, she is responsible for providing communications, marketing and outreach efforts for the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Total Asset Visibility program. Previously, Deck served as a Senior Communications Manager at IBA, where she provided strategic communications planning, public relations, writing and editorial support to the U.S. Citizenship Immigration Services (USCIS). There, she worked to modernize and strengthen the agency’s communication efforts by creating and implementing integrated communication campaigns, including news and marketing collateral to promote agency initiatives and product launches. She also prepared leadership messages, spearheaded the development of the agency’s first social media program, and planned USCIS promotional events and photo shoots. Additionally, she worked to create a high-impact communications program to advance the IBA brand by developing internal and external communications, including first-time television sponsorships and print advertising. Prior to consulting, Deck worked at US Airways within its Corporate Communications department as a Communications Specialist where she covered company news for several internal publications, provided media relations support, and managed company and promotional events. She also served in several roles within US Airways’ e-commerce division to include Managing Editor of usairways.com. Deck is a member of Washington Women in Public Relations and Public Relations Society of America. She also is part of the Capitol Communicators community. A native of North Carolina, Deck is a graduate of UNC Charlotte (UNCC) where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, and minored in Mass Media Communications and Political Science. While at UNCC, she was a news intern at WCNC-TV, Channel 6, and worked as a television/film production assistant at the university’s media services department.

Professional Development Co-Chair

Macie Mulvaney

marcieMacie Mulvaney currently works as an Account Manager for the broadcast communications company, Medialink, a division of The NewsMarket, where she has been since 2006.  Her communication and marketing experience stems from a diverse background within the print, broadcast and online communications arenas. Her career began with the East Side News Group in Providence, RI, developing marketing and advertising strategies for several of their regional New England publications. From this, she transitioned to the television sector, working as an Account Executive for a FOX Television affiliate in New Bern, NC. This opportunity brought experience in developing marketing strategies for both established and new business clients through television and Web site opportunities. Throughout her career she has enjoyed coordinating live promotional events while partnering with local media venues to increase client's visibility.
Mulvaney’s current position with Medialink allows her to provide strategic and creative multimedia counsel to her clients, provide start to finish project management, and also oversee day-to-day client relationships. Current clientele include a large variety of nonprofit organizations, medical associations, and government agencies, as well as partnerships with public relations professionals and advertising agencies on national and local campaigns.
Macie holds a BS in Marketing with a double minor in Psychology and Literature from Johnson & Wales University in Providence, RI.  She included in her education a semester at Cambridge University in Cambridge, England.  Macie is dedicated to continual personal and professional development as well as being very active in her community.

Professional Development Co-Chair

Lisa Newman, MediaLink


lisaLisa Newman manages PR, nonprofit, and federal accounts at Medialink, a division of The NewsMarket. She works with a diverse client base on a variety of media projects with special emphasis on consumer education and outreach. Some of her recent projects include foreclosure prevention, psychological health care for military service members, insurance education, and food safety. Leveraging her experience in PR and advertising services, she partners with clients to reach national and local audiences on Television, Radio and the Web.
Prior to joining Medialink, Newman was a District Manager in the education division of Discovery Communications. She worked with superintendents and technology directors to implement world class video–on-demand and web based educational content for K-12 school districts in many east coast and New England states. She was also a member of Discovery’s Multicultural Committee where she helped launch the company’s first minority recruitment workshop, and mentoring program.
Before Medialink, Newman worked with WBAL-TV 11, a Hearst-owned station and local affiliate of NBC. She collaborated with advertising agencies, local businesses, and nonprofit organizations to develop and execute strategic advertising and public service campaigns that reached consumers on television and the Web in Baltimore. She was the recipient of many performance based awards and selected to attend the Broadcast Sales Academy in Dallas, Texas.
Newman grew up in Columbia, South Carolina, and earned her B.A. in English at the University of South Carolina - Coastal. She currently resides in Silver Spring, MD with her husband and daughter.

Partnerships Chair

Kendra Kojcsich, Porter Novelli

Kendra Kojcsich works with Porter Novelli's health and social marketing clients to develop brand messages, design and write materials, create media relations strategies, plan and implement special events, and successfully pitch top-tier print and broadcast media. Currently, she works with the American Heart Association (AHA) on their trans fats consumer education campaign. For the AHA, she coordinates and conducts campaign media outreach efforts, works with campaign spokespeople and handles event planning logistics. She also coordinated media relations efforts for the launch of the first ever Physical Activity Guidelines for Americas for the Centers for Disease Control and Health and Human Services. In addition, Kojcsich served on the core team for GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), working within the tobacco control and consumer arenas to highlight the proven success of GSK's stop-smoking products. She played a significant role in the development and launch of the Partnership to End Cervical Cancer, a coalition bringing together more than 40 independent organizations with support and funding from GSK.
Prior to joining Porter Novelli, Kojcsich interned at the March of Dimes Shenandoah-Piedmont Region, where she spearheaded all public relations activities. She was responsible for creating and placing local public service announcements and stories, drafting weekly newsletters, and planning monthly community events. In addition, she also worked as a speech consultant for the Communication Resource Center at James Madison University, where she tutored students in developing strong public speaking skills.
Kojcsich volunteers for several local organizations, including the American Red Cross corporate headquarters in the public affairs division where she assists in public relations activities during the hurricane disaster season. Kojcsich graduated from James Madison University with a Bachelor of Science in Communication with concentrations in public relations, health communication and organizational communication and a minor in Political Science.

Membership Chair

Caitlin Douglas

catilinAs part of Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide’s (Ogilvy PR) Washington office, Douglas supports her clients through the research, media monitoring, drafting documents, coordination of account activities, and monthly reporting and invoicing. Douglas currently supports the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Choose Respect, promoting healthy relationships among teens; the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s (NHLBI) emerging national campaign to raise awareness that the risk factors for heart disease start to develop in childhood; CDC’s National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, providing technical assistance for grantees; and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Media Support account. For CDC’s Choose Respect, Douglas currently supports the redesign efforts for CDC’s Web site, www.chooserespect.org. The new site will launch in the spring of2010 with a focus on providing information and resources for adult influencers. Douglas has supported redesign efforts through content reorganization and development as well as assisting in the technical development of the new Web site. She also contributed to the research and writing of a literature review to identify the best practices in communicating with youth in high-risk urban communities regarding health behavior change to inform a new teen dating violence prevention campaign. In addition, she provides daily reports on relevant public health issues and trends effecting teens to inform campaign planning. Douglas manages the development of campaign materials including content development, design, and concept and editorial clearance for NHLBI’s emerging pediatric heart health campaign. She also wrote and edited content for the campaign Web site. In addition, she led the development of an environmental scan and media analysis to inform campaign strategic planning. Douglas is also overseeing the OMB clearance process for a baseline study on parental knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to pediatric cardiovascular health. For CDC’s National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, Douglas is currently working on the development of the communications plan for the grantee assistance and marketing program. She contributed to qualitative research with grantees to inform the communications plan, including the development of a research report on grantee needs. Prior to joining Ogilvy PR, Douglas worked as an Associate at Chlopak, Leonard, Schechter and Associates. During her time there, she supported public relations efforts for a broad range of clients, including litigation communication support for Pfizer and reputation management for the President of the Republic of Congo-Brazzaville. Before working at Chlopak, Douglas interned at the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids where she assisted both national and state-widecampaigns to effect public attitudes and policies on tobacco. As an intern, she assisted in contacting the media with relevant news, drafting editorial materials and providing research on the current trends in tobacco reform. Douglas holds a B.A. in Public Communication with a minor in Political Science from American University. She joined Ogilvy PR’s social marketing practice in 2008 as an Assistant Account Executive.

Pro Bono Co-Chair

Deborah Brody

deborahDeborah Brody is a marketing writer, consultant and English-Spanish translator. She established her business, Deborah Brody Marketing Communications, in 2002.
Brody has fifteen years of experience working in advertising and public relations. She started her career at Houston Effler Herstek Favat, a top Boston advertising agency. In 1997, Brody relocated to Miami where she worked at the oldest public relations agency in South Florida and later for one of the largest Latin American-focused public relations agencies, The Jeffrey Group. She also served as a lecturer in Advanced Public Relations Writing at Florida International University.
Brody moved to Washington, DC in 2005, and since then has written, edited and translated a variety of marketing pieces for clients such as the nonprofit B’nai B’rith International and others. For several semesters, she served as a senior consultant with the Office of Business Communications at American University’s Kogod School of Business, working with students to improve their written and oral presentation skills.
Brody obtained a B.A. degree in Politics from Brandeis University, and a Master of Science in Mass Communication from Boston University.

Pro Bono Co-Chair

Tina McCormack

tinaTina McCormack is the Senior Associate at C.Fox Communications adding a deep understanding of communications, specifically in the nonprofit sector to the firm. C.Fox Communications is an integrated communications firm with a suite of clients ranging from international nonprofits to consumer products to local brick & mortars. At the firm, she oversees client Public Relations tactics, brand strategy, events, social media, and media relations. Prior to C.Fox, McCormack consulted for entrepreneurial start-ups. Previously, she served as Director of Communications for Starlight Children’s Foundation MidAtlantic, a health focused nonprofit with a mission to bring joy to seriously ill children. There, she was responsible for developing communications strategy and tactics, launching a new brand for the organization, creating strategic partnerships and producing large scale galas.       
Before joining Starlight MidAtlantic, McCormack worked for the leading digital media company, FierceMarkets, playing an integral role in business-to-business events and sponsorships. She managed various executive events in the wireless, telecom and healthcare industries across the country in conjunction with leading industry tradeshows. McCormack also spent several years working with high profile consumer brands, various Fortune 500 companies, and small start-ups consulting on PR tactics and event strategy. McCormack is a frequent volunteer with Greater DC Cares and is an avid foodie in the Greater DC area. She holds a B.A. in Communications with a focus in PR and a minor in Marketing with a focus in promotions from Miami University (OH).  McCormack serves as a guest lecturer at Miami as part of the Miami Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies.  She is also a member of PRSA's National Capital Chapter.

Executive Communicators Chair

Joan Coyle

JoanJoan Coyle is a Strategic Communications Consultant with EEI Communications, where she provides clients in the nonprofit, corporate and government sectors with public relations strategies, media relations management and Internet-based communications. Joan’s professional background includes communications, issue advocacy, political, and Capitol Hill experience. Her area of expertise is developing and directing strategic communications projects that impact federal, state and local economic policies while positioning organizations as leaders in their respective fields. Joan’s communications work has taken her from Texas to North Carolina to Southern California where her issue education efforts affected election results and public policy. Prior to EEI, Joan was Vice President for Public Relations with Washington Partners, LLC, a consulting firm specializing in education issues. She secured positive media coverage for clients in print, radio, and TV and hosted A Look at Higher Education, a monthly Sunday morning radio program broadcast during Clear Channel Communications’ public programming block. She developed and expanded the scope of client accounts and maintained a 100% client retention rate. Before joining Washington Partners, Joan was a public relations consultant. She planned and executed media and public relations strategies for trade associations, unions, political candidates, and non-profits. She conducted successful national public relations campaigns on topics ranging from food irradiation to federal education funding. A Michigan native, Joan earned a Bachelor of Science in Social Sciences from Central Michigan University and a Master of Arts in Special Education from Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. Currently a resident of Arlington, Virginia, she is an active member of her community. A former teacher, Joan pursues continuing education in Web 2.0, public relations, branding, web writing and television production.

Kate Barrett manages marketing communications and media relations for New Enterprise Associates (NEA), a leading global venture capital firm. In this role she leads the development and execution of NEA’s global communications strategy and initiatives, including corporate marketing, public and media relations, and portfolio company communications support. Recent areas of particular focus include the firm’s website redesign and a series of sector-focused videos featuring NEA portfolio companies. She is also actively involved in the firm’s limited partner relations and internal communications initiatives.

Prior to joining NEA in 2007, Barrett managed public relations for MedImmune (now a subsidiary of AstraZeneca PLC), with a focus on corporate branding communications and activities such as the company’s annual report and corporate website. Previously, she served in a variety of communications and website development roles at The Kroger Co. and The E. W. Scripps Company. She began her career as a community correspondent for The Cincinnati Enquirer. Barrett earned her bachelor’s degree in English/Journalism at Miami University.
